'Cheap' Asking Price Of Historic NY Victorian Has Looky-Loos Talking: 'What's The Catch?'

If the housing market has you weeping into your Zillow alerts, this might be the fairy tale you’ve been waiting for—assuming you’re not afraid of snow, taxes, or the occasional creaky floorboard.

A stunning 1870 Italianate Victorian in upstate New York has the internet positively swooning after it hit the market this week for a jaw-dropping $190,000. That’s right. Four bedrooms. Four bathrooms. Over 3,300 square feet. For less than the price of a Brooklyn studio closet.

Located at 465 West Church Street in Elmira (Chemung County), the 3,392-square-foot beauty was listed Monday, March 24 and quickly set social media ablaze with over 3,300 Zillow views and a flurry of attention on the Historic Homes of America Facebook page.

“The seller is devastated to have to relocate, but this is now your opportunity to own this beautiful home!” reads the listing from Smart Focus Realty.

Victorian Drama, Modern Plumbing

The home has been undergoing a “massive restoration” over the last five years, and while it still needs some finishing touches, there’s plenty to make a romantic (or HGTV-obsessed) heart flutter: high ceilings, multiple fireplaces, stained glass windows, pocket doors, ornate moldings, a grand sweeping staircase and a back staircase (because one just isn’t enough).

There’s also a “newer” furnace, updated electric, and a backyard filled with fenced-in gardens and perennials. Oh, and a two-car garage with new everything—roof, doors, and electric.

So What’s The Catch? That’s exactly what Facebook commenters wanted to know.

“What’s the catch?” one user asked, prompting the immediate and inevitable response: “taxes!” (For the record, annual property taxes are around $5,500, according to Zillow.)

“It’s a very pretty house, but all I can think of is all the cold and snow!” another user lamented.

Still, the home’s architectural charm is undeniable. One commenter drew a striking comparison: “It’s Halliwell Manor! (From the hit fantasy series, Charmed.) “Paint the outside purple and it’s almost the exact house… I love it!”

Already Off The Market?

Unfortunately for dreamers, DIYers, and time-traveling witches, the house was listed as under contract as of Thursday, April 3—though it never hurts to cross your fingers for a real estate miracle.

Comparable homes in Elmira have sold for much more, and statewide, the February median sale price in New York was a steep $749,000, according to Realtor.com. So yes, this listing feels a bit like stumbling on buried treasure. Or at least, a Hallmark movie set.
